Congratulations on completing the accredited SMSF101 course.

PLEASE NOTE: we are no longer accepting new students for the full course leading to RG146 accreditation. If you are a current student, please read the information below and/or get in touch with us to finalise your studies.

To finalise your RG146 status, you’ll need to be enrolled with our RTO and submit your completed case study project for formal assessment.

Enrolling is as simple as completing an online enrolment form. We’ll provide the link when you’re ready.

The case study task should take you approximately 2-3 hours. It involves understanding a hypothetical client’s profile and answering a series of short answer questions that would comprise your Statement of Advice to them.

When you have completed this task, and it has been assessed as meeting the requirements, you’ll receive a statement of attainment from the RTO. This statement will list all of the nationally recognised units of competency you have achieved. The statement of attainment can be provided to your employer or licensee as evidence that you satisfy the requirements of RG146.

Becoming ‘licensed’

PLEASE NOTE: Your employer or licensee may have further training and education benchmarks, beyond the RG146 standard, that you are required to meet before you can begin providing advice. This is because RG146 is a ‘regulatory guide’ that can be read separately from a licensee’s general obligation (under RG104), which is to ensure that all staff “have the necessary knowledge and skills (and) undertake continuing training programs to maintain and update their knowledge and skills”. In other words, your employer or licensee may decide that you need to complete further training before you can begin providing advice.

If you are still unsure of whether you are legally allowed to begin practicing, please speak to your employer.

If you are seeking to apply for an individual AFS license, please refer to the ASIC website for information on how to submit your application.

Pathways from RG146

Looking to further your professional education and stand out from the crowd as a practitioner? You may be able to use your statement of attainment to apply for RPL (recognition of prior learning) or credit transfer towards a higher qualification. Although higher qualifications are not required for compliance purposes, many practitioners find them to be a critical part of their professional and business success.

From your SMSF101 RG146 course, you may continue on to:

  • a Diploma of Financial Planning
  • specialist courses
  • an Advanced Diploma of Financial Planning
  • a Bachelor of Financial Planning
  • a Master of Financial Planning

Additionally, the SMSF101 course leaves students well-equipped to undertake the SMSF Associations’ Specialist Advisor exam, which is recognised industry wide.
